SPF essentials: protect your skin and prevent early ageing

SPF essentials for protecting your skin and preventing ageing

Summer is in full swing and we have already had plenty of long, hot days here in the UK. With the warmer weather comes the welcome appearance of beach days, time out with friends and summer events. With all the fun in the sunshine, it can be easy to neglect our skin when it’s at its most vulnerable. At VIVA, we are passionate about good skincare all year round, and have compiled a list of SPF essentials to protect your skin.

Protection is everything.

There’s no such thing as tanning healthily without protection. The importance of shielding our skin from the sun is overlooked far too often, but those invisible rays can leave lasting damage far beyond a little burn. The first step to skin protection is to always wear a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 and UVA/UVB protection. We recommend using an SPF50.

Apply liberally to all areas that are going to be exposed to the sun including your scalp, ears, hands and feet and ensure you do so 30 minutes before leaving the house to allow the product to sink in and repeat often. It is always a good idea to cover your skin with appropriate clothing; for instance the shoulders are a hot spot for burning, so wearing a lightweight, breathable t-shirt when the sun is at it’s hottest is advisable. Hats and sunglasses are also a must to protect your scalp and eyes.

Don’t forget your lips!

Our lips are sensitive and without protection they can be quickly damaged. They can get easily burnt, sore and chapped if not looked after properly, and the sun can even be the catalyst for a bout of cold sores or spots. To protect your lips, keep a moisturizing lip balm with a high SPF factor handy and reapply throughout the day.  Applying a SPF 50 sunscreen directly to the lips can also help.

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise.

The sun can be very harsh and drying for the skin so it’s important to moisturize regularly. Products containing Vitamin E are particularly good because of its anti-inflammatory and calming properties. If you have become slightly burnt, products containing aloe vera are also very effective as it contains anaesthetic properties that relieve sore or peeling skin.

Fake it.

The desire to get a glowing tan can make the temptation to bake in the sun all too appealing. The safest way to achieve a bronzed colour is to find a good quality fake tan, made with natural ingredients and enriched with super-hydrating properties. For best results, shave and exfoliate 24 hours before application. Moisturise, shower the next day, and you’re perfectly primed to apply. Make sure you quickly moisturise your elbows, knees, ankles and hands – anywhere where the product might cling. Use a highlighter to enhance your final colour.

SPF protection is essential to protecting your skin from the early signs of ageing and much more serious health issues.
