What is the difference between Botox, Dermal Fillers and AQUALYX?

BOTOX ® is in fact a brand of anti-wrinkle injection, rather than the name of the product itself. Botulinum Toxin (commonly shortened and referred to as Botox) is used to temporarily relax muscles of the face. In turn this softens fine lines and wrinkles.

It is most commonly used to improve and prevent the appearance of forehead, frown and smile lines, as well as crow’s feet. There are other more advanced uses of Botox such as treating sweating (hyperhidrosis) or reducing the appearance of a Gummy Smile. You can find these treatments on our price list.

Whilst Anti-Wrinkle Injections are used to relax the muscles, dermal fillers are used to effectively ‘fill in’ and add volume.

Dermal fillers are a fabulous way of subtly reducing the natural signs of ageing, restoring volume, improving symmetry and fine tuning and tweaking imperfections.

Dermal filler contains hyaluronic acid which is great for your skin. You may have heard of it being championed in skin creams, but a touch beneath the top layer of the skin helps to hydrate and improve tone, texture and structure, so ideal for anti-aging. Common areas for treatment are cheeks, eye bags, tear troughs, nose-to-mouth lines (nasolabial), chins, jawlines and lips.

AQUALYX is a solution of deoxycholic acid and is used as a fat dissolving injection. Deoxycholic acid is naturally present in the human body and works to emulsify fat for absorption in the intestine. When used as a treatment AQUALYX works to cause cell lysis meaning the fat cells start to break down. Popular treatment areas are the jawline, chin, legs, hips, arms and tummy. It’s important to note that these fat-dissolving injections are not a substitute for healthy weight loss, but rather a way to shape and sculpt those areas where stubborn fat persists – the process works best on a small area around the size of the palm of your hand.

If you’re unsure of treatment, don’t worry; we always take a holistic approach to treating yourself and your skin, and we believe in wellness that works (reflecting the person you feel on the inside, on the outside). Our doctors will give you sound advice during consultation and help you to make an informed decision about treatment.

Can I have treatment on the same day as my consultation?

Yes – every client must have a thorough consultation with one of our doctors. We take a conservative approach and divide treatments into sessions. If both yourself and your doctor are happy to proceed on the day, then you are more than welcome to have treatment in the same appointment. Sometimes we will recommend you to rebook for treatment in a subsequent session.

AQUALYX treatments usually require multiple sessions to achieve maximum results. Depending on the size of the area treated you may need between 2 and 8 separate sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart. The amount of appointments required will be discussed during consultation.

How should I prepare for treatment?

Thankfully non-surgical procedures don’t require much preparation but it’s important to remember that you may experience some swelling and bruising post treatment. If you have an important event coming up, we recommend you allow 4 weeks following Botox and dermal filler treatments. We advise avoiding alcohol and strenuous exercise in the 24 hours before treatment. In the week before your procedure avoid taking any blood-thinning medication such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Please also be prepared to remove makeup from the treatment area when you come to clinic.

With all of our treatments it’s important to consider that we may need to split your treatment up into multiple sessions and so you should allow ample time for this, particularly in the lead up to important events. AQUALYX treatments usually require 2 or more sessions and this will be discussed during your consultation. Swelling following AQUALYX can be quite severe. If you are having treatment in the neck area you may want to bring a scarf with you to wear after your appointment.

What side effects can I expect after treatment?

Non-Surgical aesthetic treatments are very safe and our Aesthetic Artists are incredibly highly-trained, but no treatment comes completely risk-free. The skills and techniques used by our Aesthetic Artists mean side effects are much less likely, but it is completely normal to experience some slight swelling/redness/bruising around the treated area.

This is an extremely common side effect which will subside in most cases very quickly, although in rare cases can last up to 10 days. There is a settle-in period for the product, so you may notice small bumps or inconsistencies following dermal filler treatment. Again, this is entirely normal and will subside within two weeks.

If you have opted for our AQUALYX fat-dissolving treatment you may notice quite a lot of swelling and bruising for the days following treatment so it is important to be prepared for this. After 7-10 days swelling should start to subside, but it isn’t uncommon for the side-effects to continue. In this instance, we recommend you contact your VIVA doctor for reassurance. It’s likely you may not feel like exercise for the week following treatment if you have received treatment in the neck area. In extremely rare cases it can cause painful bruising and itching and permanent inflammatory issues. The full effects of the treatment can be seen after 4-6 weeks.

After your chemical peel it is normal to experience some skin sensitivity and you can expect the skin to flake for up to 10 days after treatment. It is therefore important that you follow the skin care routine our doctor set out for you in clinic.

How long do I need to wait before I see results?

Aside from the settle-in period during which your results will improve over a week or so, dermal filler results are immediate. Botox takes a little longer to take effect and results will be achieved within 10-14 days. AQUALYX will start to take effect immediately after treatment but may not be noticeable due to swelling. The full results will become visible between 4-6 weeks.

Do I need a consultation?

Yes. Consultations are an incredibly important part of the treatment process for both patient and practitioner. Not only does this enable our Aesthetic Artists to offer their honest and expert opinions, but it also allows both parties to listen. There is a lot of information available regarding aesthetic treatments and the consultations provide a calming and open environment in order to discuss details. The education process for us is as important as the procedure.

How long will treatment take?

Treatment time will depend on the type of procedure you are having. In general, Botox appointments will last up to 30 minutes, while dermal filler and AQUALYX appointments will take 30-60 minutes.

The majority of this time is spent on preparation, capturing before and after imagery, time for numbing cream to take effect and providing the information necessary so that both parties are happy to proceed.

The actual time carrying out the procedure is reassuringly a lot less. If you are having multiple treatments this may need to be split into sessions – this will be discussed during your consultation.

Will my results look natural?

Yes, absolutely. We specialise in delivering natural looking results that leave our clients feeling the best version of themselves. To ensure these high standards are met we take a comprehensive approach to treatment and tailor every procedure to each individual client.

Does it hurt?

You may experience a little discomfort during treatment but the techniques we use are designed to minimise this as much as possible. We also use numbing cream for your comfort.

How can I avoid bruising?

Bruising and swelling is to be expected after treatment and is a normal part of the healing process. To help swelling go down you use Arnica and apply ice. Its important to avoid blood-thinning painkillers such as aspirin and ibuprofen as this can actually make the bruising worse. If you do need something to ease discomfort, opt for paracetamol.

What if I don’t know which treatment I should get?

If you are unsure which treatment would be best for you, don’t worry. Taking a holistic approach to aesthetics, our team will discuss your concerns and goals with you whilst also taking into account your lifestyle and how this might affect your skin. Following this, one of our Aesthetic Artists will give you expert and honest advice during your consultation, helping you make an informed decision about treatment.

What products do you use?

At VIVA Skin Clinics we only use the highest quality, most trialled and rigorously tested products. We use Botox®, the Juvéderm VYCROSS range for filler treatments and AQUALYX for fat-dissolving injections. The exact product within the VYCROSS range used will be dependent on your treatment and will be discussed during consultation.

How long is recovery time?

Downtime is very minimal when it comes to Botox and dermal filler procedures and you should be able to get on with most normal activities straight after treatment. There are some activities you should avoid in the 48 hours that follow treatmen – these are outlined in our aftercare advice.

AQUALYX aftercare

It’s normal to experience some bruising/swelling/redness for a few days after Botox and dermal filler treatments. Very occasionally this can last up to 2 weeks. Similarly, following a chemical peel treatment you can expect to peel and flake for up to 10 days. If you have a special event coming up, we recommend allowing at least 4 weeks post-treatment. AQUALYX injections can cause more substantial swelling which can last up to 6 weeks, at which point the full results will be visible. You may also need to avoid exercise for the week following this particular treatment

How long can I expect results to last?

The longevity of results varies from treatment to treatment and client to client depending on a variety of factors including the product used, the area treated and the metabolism of the client. Generally we expect Botox results to last up to 4 month and dermal fillers to last 6-12 months. AQUALYX results are permanent as the injections work to destroy the fat cells. That said it is important to maintain a healthy weight as if more weight is gained, a fatty appearance will develop again.

Do I need a check up?

Generally you won’t need a check up but if after 2 weeks you would like to come in for a review, our door is always open.

How often can I have treatment?

If you would like to tweak or top-up your Botox or dermal filler treatment, we ask that you allow 2 weeks before coming back to clinic. This is to let the product completely settle and for any residual swelling to subside. After this time you are also welcome to come in and discuss any further treatments with us. For AQUALYX procedures you should allow swelling to disappear fully before having your next treatment. This can take up to 6 weeks.

How do I get a last minute appointment?

We have a high number of bookings and it is always best to book in advance to avoid disappointment. However, we do sometimes have last minute appointments available. You can schedule last minute appointments online here. Alternatively, you can call us on 02037 332199.

All bookings will require a deposit of £50 to secure your appointment.

Can I travel after treatment?

Yes, you are able to travel after treatment. We recommend allowing 48 hours before flying.

I need to reschedule my appointment. Will I lose my deposit and be charged again?

If you wish to reschedule 48 hours prior to your appointment, your £50 deposit will be kept on file and carried over to secure your new appointment.

If you reschedule any later than the 48 hour notice period, you will lose your deposit and a new deposit of £50 will be required to make another appointment.

Do you offer finance options?

We don’t offer finance options at our clinic. All treatment costs need to be paid for in full on the day of your appointment. If you are having multiple treatments, this can sometimes be split into sessions and this will effectively split the cost.

Where are you located?

We have clinics in London and Kent. Check our clinics page to view our locations.

Do you use numbing cream?

Yes – anaesthetic cream is applied prior to all our treatments. There is also a local anaesthetic contained within the solution of our products for your comfort.

Do I need to shave my beard before treatment?

If you have facial hair and are joining us for a Jawline Enhancement or Chin Enhancement, please shave prior to treatment. This is because to achieve the best results we need to clearly see all facial contours when treating the area.

Aftercare

If you don’t find an answer to your question below, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team.

Dermal Filler Treatment Aftercare

You may notice some slight swelling, redness or bruising around the treated area; this is completely normal and should settle within a week. It is important to try not to massage or scratch the area post treatment. In the 24-hour period after your visit to the clinic we advise against alcohol consumption, strenuous exercise, wearing make-up on the area and contact with direct sunlight. Please also avoid heat related environments such as sauna, steam room and Jacuzzis for a 48-hour period following your appointment. Facial massages should be avoided for a 2-week period. After this, downtime is minimal and you are able to return to your normal day-to-day activities.

Botox Treatment Aftercare

The most important thing to remember post treatment is not to rub or massage the area for 4 hours following your appointment. It is therefore advised not to fall asleep on your front to allow the Botox to settle. It is also important to note that you may experience slight bruising in the area, which is normal. Botox usually takes around 7-10 days for effects to come on and 2 weeks to produce maximum desired results. It is also recommended that you avoid strenuous exercise and applying makeup in the 4-5 hours following treatment. Please also avoid heat related environments such as sauna, steam room and Jacuzzis for a 48-hour period.

Chemical Peel Aftercare

After your chemical peel it is normal to experience some skin sensitivity and you can expect the skin to flake for up to 10 days after treatment. It is therefore important that you follow the skin care routine our doctor set out for you in clinic. You should also treat your skin gently and avoid picking or trying to remove any peeling. Avoid the use of scrubs or skin masks while skin is peeling- instead you can use a hydrating product such as Obagi Hydrate, which will help ease any discomfort (please as your practitioner about this in clinc). During the peeling process you should also stay out of the sun and wear SPF factor 50 when outdoors. You should avoid any heat related environments such as sauna, steam room and Jacuzzis for a 7- day period and sunbathing for 2 weeks post procedure. No glycolic acid/resurfacing/retinol products are to be used for a 2-week period both before and after your chemical peel.

AQUALYX Aftercare

You are likely to notice some significant swelling following AQUALYX treatment. This should begin to subside within a few days but it can take 4-6 weeks to completely disappear. This is a normal part of the process and can’t be avoided but you can help to subside swelling by applying Arnica and ice. If you are having treatment to the neck area you may want to bring a scarf with you to wear after your appointment. After the procedure, take the opportunity to sit back and relax. You may not feel like exercise for up to a week and if you can avoid going to work for the following couple of days this is recommended. We also ask that you avoid alcohol and wearing makeup on the treated area for 24 hours following your AQUALYX procedure.
